Protein Summary

MKNK1 is a 465-amino acid protein with an N-terminal serine/threonine kinase domain and a C-terminal MAPK binding domain. It is activated by phosphorylation by ERK or p38 MAPK. Upon activation, MKNK1 phosphorylates eIF4E at Ser209, promoting translation of mRNAs with complex 5' UTRs, many of which encode proteins involved in cell cycle and survival. MKNK1 also interacts with other proteins such as eIF4G and may have non-kinase functions.
